What Makes Marco Island So Good for Shelling?

Perhaps the most important aspect of Marco Island that makes it a premier shelling destination is its geography. The island’s location inside the Gulf slope, as well as its proximity to the Thousand Islands, creates a great environment for shells to wash up on the shore. Marco Island itself also serves as a natural barrier, further funneling shells onto its shore.
What Types of Shells Are on Marco Island?
Before heading out to Marco Island’s shores, here are just a few of the shells you might spot during your search!
Coquina Shells

These tiny, colorful shells are found frequently on Marco’s Island’s shores, making them easy to grab and collect. Often pink, yellow, or orange, these shells can be found clustered directly on the shore.
Florida Fighting Conch

Another common sight around Marco shores, these guys measure in at about 3–4 inches and have ribbed bodies with brown stripes down their sides. These shells and their iconic design are a classic Florida beach find, but finding them fully intact may take some searching.
Sand Dollars

A likely familiar and somewhat prevalent sight on Marco beaches, sand dollars can be found near quieter stretches, tidal areas, and lagoons. While they look and often behave like shells when they are dead, these round, often white, shell-like objects are actually the skeleton of a dead urchin. Because of this, it is important to pick them up only when they are dead and white. Avoid live sand dollars; picking them up is illegal and dangerous.
Scotch Bonnet

While a bit rarer, these stunning white and brown sea snail shells are known to show up on Marco Island shores from time to time. They are easily recognized by their plump midsections and the open hole at one end. While finding this type of shell is possible, consider yourself lucky if you do.
Junonia

Perhaps one of the hardest to find on this list, the junonia is a long, narrow shell adorned with spots and a large hole running down its side. If you’re a serious sheller headed to Marco Island, you already know how much of a bucket list find this is.
Best Shelling Spots on Marco Island
With so many great spots to go shelling around Marco Island, we want to break down the different sites and how they differ.
Tigertail Beach

A top shelling spot in the area, and for a good reason! The wide area of the beach and the natural coastline give you plenty of opportunities to spot finds like coquinas, cockles, scallop shells, and more. This beach also features Sand Dollar Spit, one of the most famous shelling areas on Marco Island, right next to the Tigertail Lagoon.
South Marco Beach
This is a great shelling spot if you’re looking for some easier beach access. While this beach is a little calmer than Tigertail, you still have plenty of great opportunities to spot some smaller shells along the shorelines, especially scallops, augers, and olives. We recommend this beach for more casual shellers; however, if you want to increase your chances of finding something really nice, we suggest you head out early, before the large beach crowds begin to move in.
Keewaydin Isaldn

If you’re seeking more adventure, head on down to Keewaydin Island. The barrier island lies north of Marco Island and is accessible only by boat, making it feel more remote. Lower foot traffic and fewer visitors also increase the chances of you coming across rarer shells before anyone else. Common finds here include fighting conchs, cockles, and lightning whelks.
Shelling Tours on Marco Island

Looking to enhance your shelling experience? Plenty of shelling tour charters on Marco Island are here to help. While you’re more than able to hop around on the beach and search for shells on your own, a tour with an educated guide can make a world of difference. If that sounds like fun to you, consider one of the following tours.
Marco Island Shelling
Spend part of the day with this tour provider, one of the most recommended in the area! Marco Island Shelling offers 3-hour tours with an emphasis on customer satisfaction, which has led to them being featured on local news.
Treasure Seekers Shell Tours
Treasure Seekers Shell Tours offers guided shelling trips from Goodland, just outside Marco Island. Their boat tours explore remote barrier islands in the Ten Thousand Islands, including areas like Kice Island and Dickmans Island. It’s a great option for visitors who want to reach secluded shelling spots accessible only by boat.
Nautical Life Shelling Tours
Grab a tour with Captain Carlos Escarra for some exciting offshore shelling action. These tours explore secluded islands and sandbars in the Ten Thousand Islands, giving guests more time to search for shells away from the busier beaches. They offer shared and private shelling tours, plus eco-tours with wildlife viewing and a short shelling stop.
