Best Kayaking Spots on Marco Island
With so much water and wildlife to explore, it may be a bit difficult to decide where exactly you want to paddle. Here are some of our picks for the top sites you should visit for your Marco Island kayak adventure.
Tigertail Beach and Tigertail Lagoon

If you want a laid-back paddle with beach views, this is the spot for you. Sitting just outside of one of Marco Island’s most popular beach access points, the lagoon area gives you calmer water, while the surrounding shorelines make it easy to turn the outing into a full beach day. The area is also very easy to access. All you need to do is park at the access and walk over a sandbar to the lagoon. The beachy vibe and beginner-friendly water make this a perfect spot for a family paddle.
Isle of Capri Water Paddlecraft Park
This launch site is Collier County’s only public access site dedicated exclusively to paddle craft (including kayaks)! Ease in when you arrive, as this spot has picnic pavilions, public restrooms, and plenty of walking space near the ramp. The shallow mangroves take you through paths that are full of wildlife opportunities!
Rookery Bay National Estuarine Reserve

This is a world-class paddling experience you won’t want to miss. This pristine habitat offers the best possible experience through mangroves and natural waterways, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. The calm, shallow waters, along with the reserve’s natural beauty and undisturbed nature, make this one of the top experiences on Marco Island — full stop.
Wildlife on the Water!
One of the highlights of going on a kayak adventure in Marco Island is the diverse wildlife you’ll see along the way. Florida is home to a variety of animals, including manatees and birds. Here are some of the native species you may see throughout Marco Island!
Manatees

These large, endangered sea animals are native to Florida and usually swim around in warmer waters. They can be found alone or in small groups and surface every 3-4 minutes, giving you a chance to see them up close. You’ll typically see these guys in shallower residential canals and estuaries.
Time of year: November to March
Sea Turtles
These ocean favorites are seen all around Marco Island! You can typically see them up close from your kayak, but you’ll have better chances during the evening, as they are most active at night. Additionally, if you time your trip properly, you can see them come up to the sand and lay eggs!
Time of year: May to October
Dolphins

These Florida natives love to swim around different parts of Marco Island, meaning you won’t likely just find them in one spot. Dolphins are highly active swimmers, so expect to see them near the 10,000 Islands and shallow Gulf waters. Try to head out early to see them, as dolphins don’t disappear at noon, but they become a lot less common on the water as the day goes on.
Time of year: May to September
Black Skimmer
While these shorebirds aren’t native to the area, they do love to spend some time here during the winter. Easily seen on the shore, you can recognize these birds by their black hind feathers, white bellies, and bright, orange beaks.
Time of year: November to March
Wildlife Safety Tips
It is generally advised that kayakers avoid excessive interaction with sea life while on the water, especially when encountering dolphins and manatees. Try to maintain a distance of at least 50 feet from them, and if they do approach your boat, stay calm and let them pass. Prolonged exposure to humans and manatees can be dangerous for them. Watch out for sea turtles approaching the surface, and never try to pull one out of the water. Avoid feeding any wildlife and do your best to leave areas as you found them.
Guided Kayaking Tours

Don’t have a kayak? Not sure what you’d do if you rented one? Don’t worry! Plenty of businesses and operators around Marco Island offer kayak tours, providing everything you would need for a fun day on the water. Tour guides typically know their areas well and work to bring visitors closer to wildlife and stunning natural scenes, helping guests make the most of the trip.
